Huskies Win First ECAC Outdoor Championship Title

PRINCETON, N.J. (May 18, 2008) - The University of Connecticut women's track and field team was led by six first place performances as the Huskies won their first ECAC Outdoor Championship after taking the Indoor title back in early March.

UConn took the top spot this weekend with 83 points as Virginia came in second with 53. Cornell (43), the College of William & Mary (41) and Georgetown (40) rounded out the top five teams.

On Saturday Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) took home the top spot in the javelin with a mark of 48.85 meters (160-03) besting her school record mark previously set. On Sunday, the Huskies picked up six more victories as Trisha-Ann Hawthorne (Elmsford, N.Y.) led the way with wins in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash, as she was named the ECAC Outstanding Performer of the Meet. Hawthorne recorded a winning time if 11.51 in the 100 while finishing at 23.54 in the 200. Hawthorne was also showcased in the 4x100 relay as the Huskies took first with a top time of 45.19.

Senior Tamara Highsmith (East Haven, Conn.) won the triple jump with a mark of 12.99 (42-07.50) as she continued to lead the Huskies this season. Phylicia George (Markham, Ont.) recorded a third place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.77 in the finals. Sophomore Carin Knight (New Rochelle, N.Y.) also came in third in the high jump as she finished with a mark of 1.78 meters (5-10.00).
